The new, extra platform will improve passenger flow and reduce train delays by allowing more flexibility for trains travelling through central Manchester and across the country. To carry out the work, Salford Crescent station will occasionally close at weekends, the next scheduled date is below. More information can be found on the Network Rail website.

On Tuesday 27 May 2025 building works are due to start on the Frederick Road car park, in anticipation of receiving planning permission for a modular multi-storey car park.

If granted, construction of the two-tier (ground and first floor) car park will start in June and finish in the Autumn, as close as possible to the start of the new academic year.

During the build, most of Frederick Road car park will be out of use. Disabled parking spaces will be available (increasing to 36 spaces) which we are expanding in number to ensure availability for those that need them.

When it opens the new car park will be on two levels  (Ground and First Floor), supplying 478 car park spaces in total, an additional 138 new spaces to the 340 currently on offer.

You can find full details of all available car parking alternatives on the car parking page including information about disabled parking and a map of other car parks.

Please also visit the travel page to find alternative transport options for getting here, by train, bus, bike and e-scooter.

We know from our Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) review that there are often spaces in the The North of England Robotics Innovation Centre (NERIC) and Irwell Place car parks.

Students and staff can find more information on our Hub (intranet) pages.

If you drive to campus, please respect our local residents and avoid parking on driveways and side streets.

Health Building

Our Frederick Road campus is being developed to expand our in-house clinics, to support learning and experience and to support our wider community’s health needs. We've started work on our new Health and Wellbeing Building. Work is set to finish in October 2026.

Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT) Building

Construction of the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT) Building on Peel Park campus is well underway, works may result in some unavoidable noise and vibrations, which may be noticeable for buildings in close proximity, like the Science, Engineering & Environment (SEE) Building, University House and the Faith Centre. Mitigations are in place, with designated quiet spaces across campus for staff and students to work peacefully during noisy periods. You can find a list of quiet spots around campus on the website.

Greater Manchester Institute of Technology: Building work FAQs
When will the building works take place?

The construction will run from November 2024 to December 2025.

What are you doing to reduce the impact?

We understand the work is near to other buildings and student accommodation. Please be assured we are doing everything we can to ensure noise disturbance is as minimal as possible.

We are planning construction timing, so it protects quiet times in the morning, evening and overnight. Works will take place 08:00-18:00 Monday to Friday. There will be no work on Sundays or Bank Holidays – there is a small chance work may happen on Saturdays from 09:00-14:00 but currently there are no plans in place for weekend work.

What is the building for?

The construction is for the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT), a flagship technical skills building that will benefit students across Greater Manchester. The GMIoT is led by the University of Salford, with Wigan & Leigh College as the lead further education partner.

Where can I study across campus?

While we are not anticipating too much noise disturbance, there are lots of study spaces across campus, along with quiet places to work.

Study spaces across campus can be found here: Student Spaces on Campus - Made in Salford.

You can find a list of quiet spots around campus here: Campus quiet spaces and where to find them - Made in Salford.

Will access to accommodation be affected?

Only access to the current GMIoT construction area will be restricted across from University House. A small number of times the road or footpath may be closed for deliveries or the moving of materials, with minimum disruption.

Will parking at campus accommodation be affected?

There will be no foreseen disruptions to accommodation parking.

Will access to Peel Park Quarter accommodation (Delaney 1, Delaney 2, Daber & Unsworth) be affected?

There should be no access restrictions to these areas.  There will be times when deliveries take place which may cause short disruption.

Which blocks/rooms are closest to the construction?

Construction will be taking place near to Peel Park Quarter across from University House. Daber and Delaney 1 are the closest blocks to the construction with Delaney 2 and Unsworth set further back.

Can I move to another room?

Peel Park Quarter is very popular accommodation and fully booked so we are unable to move residents. However, we’re confident the mitigations we’ve put in place will reduce any impact on your stay.

How is biodiversity affected by the build?

In line with our sustainability objectives, it is important that the development has a positive impact (net gain) on biodiversity, compared to what was there before. An ecology survey has taken place on the site to determine the biodiversity net gain. We are pleased that this is estimated to be +25%, significantly higher than the 10% imposed by statutory planning.
