Campus safety
We are committed to providing a proactive service that will make the campus and surrounding community a safe place in which to study, live and work. Here at the university we pride ourselves on our students being able to study and socialise in a safe environment. The safety of all staff is also of paramount importance in support of our students.
Our security team is on-site and available for assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
If you need to raise an emergency alert, request first aid, or ask for help, you can do so using our SafeZone App.

We provide a security service that is available for advice and assistance 24 hours a day.
About the Security Team
Security Services is responsible for all types of security arrangements and the provision of expertise and advice which include:
- The provision of a dedicated team of in-house staff who maintain a security presence on the campus.
- A dedicated central control room maintained in the Maxwell Building operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
- Access control systems, burglar alarms and CCTV.
- Out-of-hours access to students and visitors.
- Control of car parking on the university campuses.
First Aid
If you are on campus and require first aid, you can request first aid using our SafeZone App.
- If you or another person nearby needs medical assistance, you can use the App so that qualified first-aider campus security colleagues may be able to locate and reach you. Examples include:
- If you or someone near you is hurt or injured.
- If you are not sure whether you need an ambulance, raise the First Aid alert and ask the responder, who can call for an ambulance as appropriate.
If you have a less serious but still urgent health problem, you can call the National Health Service advice line on 111 or use 111 online.
If you’ve run out of your prescribed medicines, find out how to get an emergency prescription.
If you are seriously hurt or unwell, you can go to your nearest Accident and Emergency department, or call 999 to ask for an ambulance. Salford Royal Hospital M6 8HD and Manchester Royal Infirmary M13 0HY both have Accident and Emergency departments.
SafeZone

As part of our ongoing support for our students and colleagues, we have introduced the use of a safety app called SafeZone. SafeZone provides you with access to emergency or urgent assistance should you need it, the ability to request first aid, and report emergency incidents and concerns.

You can use the SafeZone app to:
Raise an emergency alert
- If you, or another person nearby, are in a situation where personal safety is threatened or are hurt or injured. Examples include:
- If you feel threatened, or if someone has threatened you.
- If you have been the victim of crime.
- If you are hurt or injured (use First Aid if minor)
- If you see somebody else being threatened, assaulted or robbed.
- Responders will then try to contact you by phone or through in-app messaging. You can respond to a message by pressing 'Open Chat'.
- If your location settings in the App are on, campus security colleagues may be able to locate and reach you.
Request first aid
- If you or another person nearby needs medical assistance, you can use the App so that qualified first-aider campus security colleagues may be able to locate and reach you. Examples include:
- If you or someone near you is hurt or injured.

Ask for help
If you want to alert campus colleagues to your needs or the needs of other people. Examples include:
- Reporting suspicious activity.
- Someone behaves in a way that makes you think that they may need help or potentially be at risk of harm to themselves or other people.
