Alumni achievements celebrated in the King's Birthday Honours list

The King's Birthday Honours list for 2025 celebrates the service of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom, and we are delighted that a number of Salford alumni have been recognised for their achievements.

A number of our alumni and colleagues received honours, including:

Alumna Susan Ferns, Prospect Senior Deputy General Secretary, has been awarded an OBE for services to green jobs and workplace transition. Susan studied Organisational Analysis and Industrial Relations at the university, graduating in 1982.

Professor Andrew Rowland, Honorary Professor (Children’s Rights, Law and Advocacy), has been awarded an OBE for services to safeguarding and the protection of children’s rights. Andrew is both an Honorary Professor and an alumnus, having completed his PhD at Salford in 2020. You can read more about Andrew's work here.

Alumnus Keith Ludeman, who graduated with an MSc in Transport Engineering and Planning in 1973, and was also one of our Honorary Graduates in 2010, was awarded an OBE for services to Transport. Keith is Chair of HS1 Limited and Chair of the London Transport Museum.

Alumnus Scott Darrough, Founder and Chief Executive, Social adVentures, was awarded an MBE for services to social enterprise and the community in Salford. Scott studied an MSc in Public Health at the university, graduating in 2011.

Alumnus Richard Ikin was awarded an MBE for services to farming, agriculture and industry. He is the founder of the Young Farmer Development Award.

Alumnus Mark Thoburn, Clinical Lead Prosthetist at Blatchford Prosthetics UK, Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre Stanford Hall, was awarded an MBE for services to defence healthcare. Mark graduated with a BSc in Prosthetics and Orthotics in 2006.

Alumnus John Thornhill, who graduated with a BSc in Adult Nursing in 2017, was awarded an MBE for services to the ex-service community and to national events. John is National Parade Marshall for the Royal British Legion.

Alumna Lisa Vint has been awarded a BEM for services to mental health awareness and suicide prevention in Merseyside. She studied Post Qualifying Studies in Health and Social Welfare, graduating in 2004.
